Devante Derricotte scene

For my feature story “The next step”, I interviewed multiple alumni about their lives after high school. When alumni Devante Derricotte came to CCHS for a photoshoot, I was able to discover his story. He told me about how his mother was diagnosed with cancer, his past, and troubles. Because this was such sensitive content, I was able to learn how to be delicate with the interview, my questions and my writing that would be presented to the public.

Diligent organization of audio, transcriptions and visuals

For every story including interviews, I diligently transcribe and upload the audio to ensure everything written down is accurate and fair to the source. This ensures the story is organized, reliable and honest. if there were to be a mishap with sources or the story, I can quickly refer back to this folder.

Transcriptions

Interviews make a story great. To make sure the story is accurate and I am carefully capturing my interviewee's opinions and outlooks on a matter, I transcribe all my interviews in the format to the left.

Establishing my role and responsibilities in the staff handbook

The ODYSSEY Media Group has a staff manual for writers to refer back to for basic AP style, questions about assignments and journalism and instruction. As an editor, I constantly refer back to the staff book to be reminded of my responsibilities and obligations as journalism. To the right are my responsibilities listed in the organized staff manual I, as well as other figures in the room, encourage the younger staffers to work with to maintain an ethical style of writing.

Acknowledging and acting on miscommunications

Miscommunications happen every day. Whether that be mixing up times or locations for interview or other conflicts with sources, it is important to acknowledge when there has been a mistake and handle it in a professional fashion.
