2019 Orchestra LGPE photo gallery

This was one of the first photo galleries I shot this year with ODYSSEY. I enjoyed the experience of being one with the orchestra and capturing a variety of angles from the performance. This opportunity definitely expanded my photography skills by giving me the chance to be on stage with dim lighting and in-action playing surrounding me.

Volleyball powderpuff photo gallery

CCHS held its first-ever boys’ volleyball powderpuff game to raise money for the volleyball team. Once I heard about this event, I was eager to take pictures of it. I have worked with cameras before, but not many times with constantly moving subjects. Despite it being a challenge, I learned more about settings on the camera, photography rules and sports coverage in general because I was placed in the scene and it was my responsibility.

Gallery: Homecoming dance 2018

Last year, I attended my schools’ homecoming dance to take pictures and get interviews during the event. While I had not had much experience with a camera at the time, I was able to learn how to get action shots of kids dancing, laughing and simply enjoying the dance. I appreciated this experience because I was exposed to the true purpose of OMG photography, capturing candid moments of the school.

August Pearson scene

While attending a culinary class for my experience story “Experiencing food”, I met a sophomore that attends CCHS, August Pearson. Curious as to the motive behind his attendance, we began talking and I learned his grandfather, Tim Dondero, led the classes. I interviewed August about his passion for cooking and his relationship with his grandfather. I am proud of the product because I was given the opportunity to learn something new about someone in school, and take it to the OMG social media for others to read about.

Ajani Wade scene

To the left is a scene of freshman Ajani Wade for my final project in 2018. We were asked to get an interview with one person from each grade level. Initially, it was somewhat difficult to talk to Ajani. He wasn’t opening up much, so I had to work to get to know him a little more. This scene retaught me different interviewing techniques for people to open up to you and so you can discover their story.

Tayshaun Dowdy scene

Tayshaun Dowdy is a senior at CCHS. In 2018, I interviewed him about his passion for music and rapping. This is one of my favorite scenes I’ve ever created because his quote shows emotion and passion. Through good and bad times, Dowdy turns to music to cope. In addition, his cousin, Stanley Button, was there with him. In the photo, Button is looking up to Dowdy, as Dowdy looks forward to the camera. This interview made me realize how much I liked meeting new people and writing human interest pieces, especially about things of the variety section like music. From there, I applied to be on the variety staff.

Angel Rosa scene

To the left is the social media element I completed for my monthly due assignment. With this short interview, I was able to discover the passion of a Clarke Central High School Angel Rosa and express it within a few sentences. Rosa is a member of the baseball team, as well as plays the cello in our school orchestra, so I was able to make an interesting connection. As I have become more comfortable with on the spot interviews, this process came somewhat naturally to me.

Scene on Justin Layne

Justin Layne is a senior basketball player at our school. When the boys’ basketball season began, we were lacking content on our social media, so I asked one of my staffers for a player to reach out to. After I met Justin, we began talking and he went in-depth about his feelings on the court. Initially, he was only talking about their schedule and more on-the-surface things, but as we went deeper into our conversation, he talked to me about the pressure put on the boys to succeed, and presented me with a new perspective, making for an interesting scene for the social media.

Grateful through the struggle

I was with OMG photographer Krista Shumaker when we ran into an acquaintance in the hall. We began talking and she uncovered a bit of her story to us. We were so amazed, we asked for her permission to interview her for a scene. She told us about her life in Thailand and her experience being a refugee in the United States. We later went on to write a profile about her in another issue of the ODYSSEY.

Randy Weaver scene

For the end of the year project, we were required to get a scene from a faculty member. I decided to talk to Mr. Randal, the school security guard. I discovered more about him and his story, and was able to share that with others.
