National Scholastic Press Association Diversity Letter

By the request of my adviser, I wrote a letter speaking on how I have been enriched by the diversity of students in the OMG and iliad. I wrote about my goals as an Editor-In-Chief for creating a publication that is reflective of the school, as well as growing up surrounded by students of different races, religions, and backgrounds.

National Scholastic Press Association Editorial Leadership nominee

I was nominated for the NSPA Editorial Leadership recognition. In the document attached, I wrote about each of my positions and experience becoming a leader in the OMG and iliad.

iliad Literary-Art Magazine diversity presentation

I designed this presentation to present to the staff about diversity. it is important for our publication to be representative of all races, ages, and genders at CCHS. Therefore, we compiled statistics regarding our diversity in submissions and created goals for this upcoming year through the use of pie charts.

iliad Literary-Art Magazine presentation

Beginning this year, I created this presentation for me and my Co-Editor-In-Chief to present to our introductory journalism class of 40 students. In this presentation, we introduced ourselves, the iliad as a magazine, club and editorial board, and included an interactive Kahoot activity quizzing them on their knowledge.

iliad Editorial Board meetings

As Co-Editor-In-Chief for the iliad Literary-Art Magazine, it is my responsibility, along with my Co-Editor-In-Chief and the Managing Editor, to lead weekly Editorial Board meetings. These meetings consist of check-in's, task assignments and magazine production updates. Every week, we create an agenda to follow when leading the meeting of eight editors.

SIPA presentation: Interviewing

I presented with the OMG Broadcast Editor at the Southern Interscholastic Press Association conference about ensuring the story, regarding the how-to's to a great interview. We spent weeks preparing, and I designed this presentation to efficiently instruct the audience and keep them engaged with the art of interviewing. I presented this to a room full of journalism students from around the south, and following the presentation, a GSPA representative requested we speak again for the 2020 GSPA. While it was initially used for this conference, I went on to present it individually to our production class of 40 students.

GSPA presentation: media convergence

I presented with the OMG editor-and-chief at the Georgia Scholastic Press Association conference about media convergence, which is the use of media on a variety of platforms. We spent weeks preparing and creating a presentation that would show everyone who attended our session what convergence was and the coolest and more efficient ways to do it. Because it was my first time presenting at a journalism conference, it was definitely nerve-wracking, but I soon became comfortable and can now present with confidence.

"Marching to your own BEAT": 300-word news story presentation

I created this presentation to present to the Journalism I class. Throughout the 15 slides, I address all required points for a 300-word news story and how to fulfill all those requirements. Because I am so comfortable with writing these stories, this assignment came naturally to me.

Leadership seminars

Every few weeks, the editorial and leadership team of the ODYSSEY Media Group unite for a leadership seminar led by someone in the community or an advisor. Every session, we spent about two hours doing various activities to discover our leadership type and how to improve upon it. We took surveys to determine what "color" we were in relation to our leadership.  The team was able to learn more about each other, our habits, preferences and how we view leadership. In addition, we discuss ways to work with each color/personality style for an efficient work environment.

Journalism conferences

The ODYSSEY Media Group attends multiple journalism conferences each year, such as the Georgia Scholastic Press Association conference and the Southern Interscholastic Press Association conference. At these conferences, the entire staff and journalism 1 class spends the whole day attending sessions and learning new things about journalism, goes out to eat, stays in assigned rooms with other staffers and bonds outside of the classroom.

Staff celebrations

For many holidays such as Thanksgiving, Valentine's day and the winter holidays, the OMG comes together to take a break from work and enjoy food and each other.

Editorial Board meetings

Every Friday morning, the editorial board of ODYSSEY meets at 7:30 for breakfast and debriefing. In these meetings, we go over plans, responsibilities and simply check up on each other. To the right is an agenda from a 2019 meeting.
